I've always wondered why it is that in a country that has one of
the richest handicraft traditions in the world, craft is still not a commercially viable
enterprise. Although intricate embroideries and weaves from India have found great favour
in international markets, weavers in Banaras or embroiderers in Bikaner barely manage to
earn enough to survive.
